A LITTLE
SOMETHING EXTRA

It seems
that the term "Lagniappe"
originated five centuries ago in Normandy and Brittany.
When grains were sold they were spread on a woven cloth
known in French as a "nappe". When the seller emptied
the contents of the cloth into the buyer’s receptacle,
there were always a few grains clinging to the cloth. To
compensate, the seller would toss a couple of handfuls
of grain from his stock into the buyer’s bin and say,
"pour la nappe," for the cloth. The custom continued and
today in Louisiana that "little something extra"
is often extended.
While I am
a native Floridian, FSU ’73 Go Noles, and not
from Louisiana, we lived there several years and this
tradition always seemed like such a nice idea, so here’s
a little Lagniappe (pronounced lan yap) for you,
below.
